Adoption Process

We do not adopt on a first-come-first-serve basis, but rather by the best match between pet and family, although we will factor in the order of applications if there are equally good matches. After you have put in an application for a dog or a cat in our care, we will begin to process your application by confirming your housing, calling your vet reference (if you have one) and calling your personal references. The adoption process can vary in how long it takes for us to process your application. We are an all volunteer program so it entirely depends on what our schedules are like any given week. Please be understanding and patient with us!

If you have applied to adopt a cat, once approved, we will notify you and let you know when will be a good time to pick up your cat and take him or her home with you.

If you applied to adopt a dog and you have been approved, we will call you to notify you of your approved status and to discuss with you the dog that you were interested in. If we predict that the dog will fit in great with your home, we will schedule a home visit with you where we will bring the dog to your home, introduce the dog to your current pets (if you have them) and make any suggestions on how to make the adoption as successful as possible with the specific dog that you have adopted.

If the home visit goes well, we will leave the dog at your home! We want everyone involved in the adoption to be happy. If you have any concerns while integrating your new dog into your family, please reach out to us and let us know.

To apply to adopt, download the adoption application above and send it to lighthouseanimalshelter@gmail.com

Adoption Fees

DOGS: $400

SENIOR DOGS: $250

KITTENS UNDER 1 YEAR: $200

CATS OVER THE AGE OF 1 YEAR: $125

All animals are spayed or neutered before adoption and current on appropriate vaccinations (rabies, distemper and bordatella for dogs and rabies and distemper for cats). Dogs are microchipped, heartworm tested, dewormed and on preventatives while in our care. Cats are feline leukemia and feline HIV tested and dewormed.

The adoption fee for dogs also helps to cover the cost of any extra vetting, boarding and/or transport incurred in each dog’s rescue. On the rare occasions when a dog comes to us already altered and/or vaccinated, those fees help save lives by funding the vetting for other animals which may require heartworm treatment, dental work or other treatments which exceed the regular adoption fees.

If you are unable to afford the adoption fees, please keep in mind that a dog or a cat is a lifetime commitment and they will require vaccines annually throughout their lifetime, annual heartworm testing (dogs), monthly preventatives for heartworm, flea and tick, treatment for any injuries or illnesses that arise, quality food and misc. costs depending on the animal (pet care while on vacation, grooming, doggy day care, etc.). While we would love to see each dog and cat in a loving home, we do want to ensure that it is a forever home that is totally committed to each animal’s care.
